Area students ages 6–18 are invited to enter the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District’s 3R’s Photo Contest.
Between now and the end of January, keep an eye out for a spontaneous recycling shot or plan a photo shoot related to the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle. Grab a digital camera or cell phone, capture that great shot, add a clever caption and submit your entry to the Solid Waste District by Thursday, January 31, 2013.

The rules, in brief, are these:
- Photos must be digital, 3 megapixels or larger.
- Images must be high/print quality: minimum 2048 x 1536 resolution with 4-inch by 6-inch print (6 megapixel picture with resolution of 3072 x 2048 preferred).
- Each entry must include the photographer’s name, address, school and age, and must include the photo caption.
- Entries are due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, January 31, 2013.
- All students ages 6–18 who are residents of Cuyahoga County or who attend school in Cuyahoga County are eligible to participate.
Complete contest rules and instructions for submitting photographs are available from the contest page on the Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District web site.
Photos will be judged in four categories, by age:
- 6–8 years old
- 9–11 years old
- 12–14 years old
- 15–18 years old
Entries will be reviewed, and at least ten entries per age category will be posted to the Solid Waste District’s website or Flickr page to be available for voting. Prizes will include a poster of winning entries and other Earth Day or recycling themed items, and all participants will receive a certificate thanking them for participating.

Keep It Out of the Landfill 
Since my father came to live with us after a heart attack, five years ago, we have been recyclers because he was. We split up our plastics/cans/glass, cardboard, mail, and plastic bags. He faithfully takes them where they need to go. As of late, he found out that he can no longer take our hard plastics/cans/jars to the Fire Department on Prouty Rd. in Concord. Do you know a place relatively close that he can now begin to take them. He is an avid recycler and has caused us to lean that way too. He asked if I could find out where he can now take these particular recyclables because he couldn’t find any articles in the paper that would guide him. I pulled up info online, learned of alot of places taking alot of things…but NOT hard plastics/cans/jars. Please advise. Thanks.

Candace, I apologize for not responding sooner.
When Mentor closed its drop-off recycling facility last January 31, I looked for another drop-off site but didn’t find anything that satisfied me. Let me look anew — your geography is different from mine, and maybe the answer I got when I questioned this issue last year will be of use (with luck, to both of us).
Thank you for sending me the question. This is what I’d hoped for when I started my blog — and dropping the ball is certainly not the response I expect of myself!

I don’t have good news for you.
* (Not much help) For the record: when I asked my Mentor council rep a year ago where I can take my recyclables, City Manager Ken Filipiak responded with a link to a page showing local government recycling drop-off locations: http://www.lakecountyohio.gov/utilities/Divisions/SolidWaste/Recycling/tabid/355/Default.aspx. Many of these sites, at least in central Lake County, have been closed.
* (No help whatsoever) The recycling dropoff at Painesville Township’s Nye Road Fire Station, which I have used and was ready to recommend, closed on Christmas Eve. (How’s that for timing?) (News-Herald article here: http://www.news-herald.com/articles/2012/12/25/news/nh6369302.txt.)
* (No help) A search on Earth911.com for “hard plastic” recycling sites within 5 miles of Zip code 44077 yielded several sites, but some of them have closed. For what it’s worth, here’s the link to the Earth911 page. (When I went back to the search page to look again for that list, I got a “Bad Gateway” error message.)
* (Maybe a little help) The site at the Painesville Township Road Service Garage at 558 Fairport Nursery Road may still be open, 24/7. Contact information: Monday through Friday, 7:00am until 3:30pm, (440)352-2661.
(No help whatsoever) Concord Township’s web site includes a page that lists “Miscellaneous Lake County Recycling Sites” (http://www.concordtwp.com/resources/documents/Miscellaneous%20Lake%20County%20Recycling%20Sites.pdf). A search of that page yielded one site that accepts plastics #1 and #2: Lake County Recycling Auto Scrap, phone number (440) 354-9929. I called them: they accept copper #1 and #2 but not any plastic.
I feel as though we’re second-class citizens. If we don’t want to/can’t pay for curbside recycling or we live in multi-family homes and thus can’t get curbside recycling, well, be prepared to drive.
I respect and share your dad’s interest in recycling, and I wish I had better news for you.
